200. AD 714
Every man measures his own worth, a great man more so than everyman. The historical
record indicates that JMC intended this to be his most ambitious and most imposing
MONUMENT TO JMC, the one that best expressed the grandeur of his heroism and
the substance of his accomplishments and, implicitly, the one that could best
be viewed as the measure of his achievement. Given the degree of decay of the
structure, the extent to which his ambitions were realized is uncertain today.
Since the rediscovery of this MONUMENT TO JMC, critics have disagreed as to
its
significance. Opinions vary from those who see it as, in the words of one, "an
affirmation of the man and his accomplishments," to those who dismiss it
as, to quote another, "nothing but a bunch of bricks."
