In September of 2002 in a small, inconspicuous garage in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, photographer and curator, Don Burmeister, started an alternative art space dedicated to presenting the work of some of the most innovative and skilled artists and photographers then active in Brooklyn. In the five years since Safe-T-Gallery opened, (the name comes from the company that shared the Greenpoint garage, the Safe-T-Mailer Co. ) it has become one of the most innovative and respected galleries in the borough. Now located in a bright and sparkling location in Dumbo, for its fifth anniversary the gallery has assembled a specially commissioned portfolio of prints and photographs from 17 of the outstanding artists whose work it has featured over the years. This body of work, S-T-G V will be on display from December 13th through December 30th at the gallery. Please join us in a celebration of the gallery’s five years in Brooklyn on Thursday, December 13th from 6 to 8 PM.
The S-T-G V portfolio, which is limited to an edition of 24, with the first 17 numbers being re-distributed to the contributing artists, reflects both the concerted effort of Safe-T-Gallery to show the best work of young emerging artists, but also highlights its commitment to showing the work of mid-career and older artists as well -- work whose cutting edge is only now becoming apparent. The seventeen artists: Corey Armpriester, Susan Bowen, Don Burmeister, Anders Goldfarb, Hilary Lorenz, Michael P. Manheim, Michael Meyer, R. Wayne Parsons, Larry Racioppo, Daryl-Ann Saunders, Lisa Studier, Sloat Shaw, Ben Sloat, Richard Sloat, H. Lisa Solon, Barbara Yoshida and Shigeki Yoshida work in a wide range of photographic and printmaking media, but share a commitment to the integrity of their medium and a commitment to individual expression and communication. Their are no decorative artists in S-T-G V although the portfolio contains no small number of beautiful prints. It is hoped that the spirit of the gallery has been captured by this small and feisty grouping of artists and their work.
