   Believing that to protect the past is to defend the future, JMC complemented his military and political achievements with encouragement of the rediscovery and preservation of the heritage of a vanished classical era. His patronage resulted in yet further advances in literature, music, and the visual and performing arts, leading to JMC becoming eponymous with an age of artistic excellence and cultural accomplishment.
