   The purpose of this monument? Of that, there is no record.
  The record does indicate, however, that JMC took particular pride in this edifice, as it was in its day the tallest structure of its type.
JMC's preference for commemorating himself through fired clay and especially rock is well known. Thus his words: "Why should I not celebrate myself with the same stuff of which mountains are made?"
